South Africa V Mexico: The Ultimate World Cup Pub (bar & restaurant) Crawl

By Anthony Lord

Game on! And as a South African, this is huge for me. So I was looking forward to being part of a great atmosphere for the opening game of the greatest show on earth. Unfortunately that wasn't to be. Including me, there were four of us watching the the game at The Horatia in Islington. At half time it was down to just three of us.

It was a pity there wasn't more interest in the game there as The Horatia is usually heaving for Arsenal home games as The Emirates Stadium is right behind the pub, so they do know their football around there.

Yesterday saw the opening of kitchen at The Horatia, which meant I had the honour of having the first cheese burger served there. And boy was it delicious; the jalapeƱo chilli giving it a bit of a kick. The burger is part of a special line up on the menu for the World Cup.

The Horatia is showing all the games on three framed big screens. There's bingo at half time, and DJs spin some tunes on Friday and Saturday after the games until 2am.

Sure it was a bit disappointing that there weren't more people there, but I'm pretty sure that was a one off for this new venue. It's bound to be busy for the other games over the next few weeks, especially for the England games. So if you in the area, pop in. A quality time is guaranteed.

I left The Horatia happy. Good food, nice cold beers, friendly staff, and a one all draw for the Bafana Bafana. There's a great month ahead of us.
